Take payments online (Stripe, PayPal, cash, bank transfer)
Choose how customers pay when they book, and connect your own Stripe or PayPal account.
How payments work
On the Payments page you switch on the ways customers can pay when they book online. There are four: Card payment (Stripe), PayPal, Cash and Bank transfer. Customers only see the methods you turn on.
- Card and PayPal payments go straight into your own Stripe or PayPal account. Bookwick never holds your money.
- Cash and bank transfer bookings are made unpaid, and you collect the money yourself.
- When a customer pays by card or PayPal, their time is held for 15 minutes while they pay. If they do not finish, the time is released for someone else.
Connect Stripe (card payments)
- Step 1: Sign in to your Stripe account and open Developers, then API keys.
- Step 2: Copy your Publishable key (it starts with pk_) and your Secret key (it starts with sk_).
- Step 3: In Bookwick, open Payments and find the Card payment (Stripe) card.
- Step 4: Paste both keys into the Publishable key and Secret key boxes and click Save.
- Step 5: Tick Enabled. The badge changes to Live.
- Step 6: Make a test booking on your booking page to check that card payment appears and works.
Tip: Your secret key is stored encrypted and never shown again. To keep it, leave the box blank when you save other changes.
Good to know: Card payment only appears to customers once both keys are saved. Bookwick does not test the keys for you, so a mistyped key only shows up when a customer tries to pay. Always make one test booking.
Connect PayPal
- Step 1: In the PayPal Developer dashboard, create an app and copy its Client ID and Client secret.
- Step 2: On Payments, paste them into the PayPal card.
- Step 3: Set Mode to Live to take real money. Sandbox is for testing only.
- Step 4: Click Save, then tick Enabled.
Good to know: PayPal starts in Sandbox mode. If you forget to switch to Live, customers cannot actually pay you.
Cash and bank transfer
- Step 1: For Cash, optionally add Instructions (for example "Please pay at reception").
- Step 2: For Bank transfer, fill in at least Account name, plus your sort code and account number or IBAN, and any Reference you want customers to use.
- Step 3: Click Save, then tick Enabled.
Good to know: Save your account details first. Bank transfer cannot be turned on without an Account name. Turning a method off and on again keeps the details you saved.
Ask for a deposit
Deposits are set on each service, not on the Payments page.
- Step 1: Go to Settings, turn on Deposits under Features, and click Save changes.
- Step 2: Open Services and edit the service.
- Step 3: Tick Require a deposit, choose a Deposit type (Percentage or Fixed amount) and enter the amount.
- Step 4: Save the service.
- If card or PayPal is turned on, customers booking that service online must pay the deposit online.
- If no online payment method is on, the deposit is shown to customers as "payable on arrival".
- Bookings you make yourself in the dashboard never force a deposit.
